Interview: Borja Bonaque

Diskursdisko: Hi Borja. To start things off, what’s your background? when did you start painting?

Borja Bonaque: When I was at school, I remember I was always drawing.

Diskursdisko: How do you mainly produce your art? Do you have a system or method that you adhere to?

Borja Bonaque: I work with the computer, first I always draw by hand but I finish it with the computer.

Diskursdisko: What inspires you?

Borja Bonaque: Everything, a color combination, a movie, even a song…

Diskursdisko: Much of your artwork has a retro vibe to it, while still feeling modern – how did you develop this style?

Borja Bonaque: Well, I use digitals programs like most of my generation. And that gives it a modern aspect.

23_23city3nouDiskursdisko: You’ve recently done a series of cityscapes that remind me of the video game Mirror’s Edge – any connection there?

Borja Bonaque: Mm… No, I don’t know this game, I’m not a fan of videogames. There are more connections with photography or the cinema

Diskursdisko: When working for clients like magazines or companies, how do you keep up the balance between clients’ wishes and concepts and your own need to produce art? do you feel there actually is any difference between “Commercial” artwork and other art?

Borja Bonaque: Most times it is difficult to do what you want, and you are below agencies that are asking you to do a different style. I always try to do something closer to my view but always according to what the client wants.

Diskursdisko: You’ve obviously got the website at borjabonaque.com, any other presences on the web you’d like to publicize? Social networking?

Borja Bonaque: I have not thought about it, at least not yet.

25_25quijotev2-nouDiskursdisko: As you use the internet to showcase your art, are there any other websites you feel have influenced you, opened your mind or shown you new ways of creating art?

Borja Bonaque: Of course, there’s always people much better than you and they can inspire you, but the inexhaustible information from internet is sometimes dangerous, and the risk of copying is high. I try to be honest with myself and open my mind.

Diskursdisko: Do you have any specific plans for the future direction of your artwork?

Borja Bonaque: Well, I’ll be working in stores online but apart from that my artwork will keep in the same line.

Diskursdisko: Borja, many thanks for the interview – is there anything you’d like to add?

Borja Bonaque: I just want thank you for your interest.

The Past …it took me a while to realize that I could make a living creating art. Diskursdisko: Hi Andrew. To start things off, what’s your background? When did you start doing illustrations/artwork? Andrew Holder: I graduated from Art Center
  • Interview: Ann Toebbe
